EPL Final Day Wrap: The Premier League closes with a relative whimper

After nine months of soccer the English Premier League season came to a close today with a relative whimper compared to the wild close last year.

Paul Gilham

The final day of the season in the England Premier League lacked the broad scope tension and excitement that we saw last season but it did feature some entertaining, if ultimately meaningless games. Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at Manchester United came to a close, Jaime Carragher played his final game for Liverpool, and Arsenal beat out rivals Tottenham for fourth place. Here's a recap of all the games from the final day of he season.

Liverpool 1-0 Queens Park Rangers

Liverpool sent defender Jaime Carragher out with a final day victory over relegated QPR. Philippe Coutinho's first half goal was the difference as Liverpool settle in to a 7th placed finish and begin looking forward to next season as they attempt to return to Europe.

Manchester City 2-3 Norwich City

Second place City ended their season on a bit of a flat note falling to Norwich City in a five goal thriller. Twice Norwich took the lead only to have Jack Rodwell pull City back even. Finally in the 65th minute Jonathan Howson scored the winner for the Canaries

Southampton 1-1 Stoke City

Peter Crouch put Stoke City ahead two minutes into the second half but Southampton answered ten minutes later behind a goal from Rickie Lambert.

Swansea City 0-3 Fulham

Alexander Kacaniklic, Dimitar Berbatov and Urby Emanuelson scored as Fulham capped off a bit of a disappointing campaign with a victory over Swansea City. The Cottagers moved up to a 12th place finish with the result while Swansea held on their ninth place spot to go with their Capital One Cup triumph.

West Ham United 4-2 Reading

Kevin Nolan and Ricardo Vaz Te had West Ham in front 2-0 at halftime but two second half goals from Garath McCleary and Adam Le Fondre helped Reading pull even and appear to at least get a relegation consolation point. Then Kevin Nolan went off for two late goals to give the Irons the win. Reading will ply their craft in the Championship next season while West Ham will likely be proud of a solid 10th place finish.

Wigan Athletic 2-2 Aston Villa

Ron Vlaar was the unlikely hero for Aston Villa as they capped a tumultuous and stressful season with a draw against relegated Wigan. Vlaar's late goal pulled Villa even after Emmerson Boyce and a Nathan Baker own-goal had allowed Wigan to overturn an early Darren Bent goal.

Chelsea 2-1 Everton

David Moyes' final match at Everton was yet another loss against one of the top English clubs as a Fernando Torres goal 15 minutes from full time pushed the Blues ahead and secured their third place finish. Juan Mata put Chelsea ahead early but Everton answered back seven minutes later thanks to Steven Naismith.

Newcastle United 0-1 Arsenal

Tottenham 1-0 Sunderland

West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United
