Going into the final round of the Serie A season, AC Milan had the edge over Fiorentina. But the Viola's 5-1 win over Pescara looked like it would be good enough to see them into the Champions League when Siena surprised Milan by opening the scoring in the first half. Then came the big twist: two goals in the final six minutes from the rossoneri saw them squeeze by Siena 2-1, sealing third place.
AC Milan squeeze into third place and the Champions League
There was one last sting in the tail in Serie A, with AC Milan salvaging a Champions League place in a dramatic comeback against Siena.
It had been a season of two halves for both Milan and Fiorentina, with the former only clicking into shape in the second half of the season. Only Juventus have beaten the rossoneri in Serie A this year, in an impressive comeback from picking up just seven points in their opening eight games.
Fiorentina, meanwhile, struggled around the turn of the year, and haven't always been able to match the consistency of the diavolo. Still, with Vincenzo Montella a relatively inexperienced coach operating with a squad largely thrown together last summer, finishing fourth is no mean feat. Tell them that now though, and you can expect a bloody nose.
