Mario Götze picked up the thigh injury in the 2-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu, as Borussia Dortmund squeezed through on aggregate. He has been sidelined since, though he could be available for the final against Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Having picked up an injury in the semi-final against Real Madrid, there’s hope the Borussia Dortmund playmaker will recover in time to make the final.

He is due to start running at the start of this week, with coach Jürgen Klopp saying: “that would be just great, because then we would have him back in full training for a week, and he would be available for us.” With Götze having been unavailable for the last few matches, Dortmund have shown their embarrassment of attacking riches, with Marco Reus moving central from his usual starting position on the left and İlkay Gündoğan being pushed further up the midfield to fill the void.
Aside from him being one of the most exciting players around at the moment, the absence of Götze would mean the game loses an interesting narrative, with the playmaker having agreed to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season. At the moment, Bayern and their supporters are probably the only people who won’t want to see him at the final at Wembley.
