Werder Bremen have announced that Robin Dutt will take over as the club’s head coach on a three year contract through June 2016. The 48 year old will replace Thomas Schaaf who stepped down by mutual agreement with the club at the end of the season after fourteen years in charge.

Robin Dutt has left his position as the DFB sporting director to become the head coach at Werder Bremen.

In a statement during his first press conference, Dutt sure seems happy to be back coaching.
“I am incredibly fortunate and unbelievably happy that I am back on the coaching bench. My heart just belongs on the training grounds. I realised that during my time with the DFB. And the fact that it’s with a club like Werder Bremen is an absolute highlight in my life. I am euphoric.”
Dutt’s last coaching position was during the 2011-12 season with Bayer Leverkusen. After failing to reach the lofty heights of second place set the previous season under Jupp Heynckes, Dutt was dismissed in favor of a pairing of Sami Hyypiä and Sascha Lewandowski. In August, Dutt was named as the new sporting director of the DFB following Matthias Sammer’s departure to Bayern Munich.
Once Werder expressed interest in bringing him to the club, Dutt had requested that the DFB terminate his contract in order for him to return to coaching, and the federation obliged. Werder must bring in players this summer to build a squad capable of challenging for a place in Europe next season. The current crop of players just isn’t good enough.
