In an attempt to bolster their defensive ranks heading into next season, Borussia Dortmund have signed Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Werder Bremen on a five year deal through June 2018. With Felipe Santana leaving for Schalke, BVB were in need of a third centerback behind Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels. Strangely, BVB have decided to pay a large sum for the Greek defender.
Borussia Dortmund sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Werder Bremen
With Felipe Santana departing for rivals Schalke, Borussia Dortmund moved to bolster their defense by singing Werder Bremen’s Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

According to this report from WAZ, BVB will be paying €9.5 million for Sokratis. That is a really large fee for a backup defender. It’s an even larger fee for a backup defender, if you wanted to believe that narrative pushed by many in the media over the last few weeks. Sokratis will also spend some time filling in at right back for Lukasz Piszczek until he returns from his soon-to-happen hip surgery.
In a statement on BVB’s website, Sokratis explain the move in a short and succinct sentence:
“I gained a lot from my two years with Werder, but now I feel ready to make the next step.”
Well, Sokratis, I hope you’re ready for the Champions League.
