PSG, Leonardo hit with sanctions over shove

Harold Cunningham

When your Director of Football shoulder barges a match official, you can expect bad things to happen to your club. It’s still not clear why Leonardo went after referee Alexandre Castro following the close of Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain’s draw against Valenciennes, but both he and les Parisiens are going to pay for his indiscretions. The Brazilian was hit with a nine-month ban from football, while PSG themselves are looking at a suspended points deduction.

The defending champions will already have a difficult challenge ahead of them -- they need to stay ahead of Lyon, Marseille and (if they’re allowed to play, which is hilariously still in question), Monaco -- and if they fall afoul of the FFF again they’ll be docked three points, which would put their quest to retain their crown in serious jeopardy. It’s not quite the scale of punishment that was meted out to Leondardo, who is still insisting that he was pushed into Castro despite plenty of video evidence to the contrary, but it’s not a good look for PSG. Is it still worth keeping their technical director on after this?
