Alberto Aquilani ruled out of Tuscan derby with injury

An injury sustained on the weekend has ruled Alberto Aquilani out of the Tuscan derby with Siena, though fortunately it’s not serious.

Aquilani sustained a knee injury in a 1-0 defeat to his former club AS Roma on the weekend, meaning Fiorentina will be a man short when they travel across Tuscany to the Montepaschi Arena on Wednesday evening. They're looking to continue their push for the Champions League.

There was some cause for concern when he went off injured -- Aquilani’s career so far has been hampered by injury problems. Fortunately this time it’s not serious, and isn’t expected to keep him out longer than a week. Aquilani has made 20 league starts this season -- in only one season in his entire career has he started more games.

That the injury isn’t serious will come as a relief for a Fiorentina side of which Aquilani has quickly become an integral part, slotting in between two other creative midfielders. He’s enjoyed the freedom to break forward as well as dictating play from deep, and his total of seven league goals is his highest ever.
