Leonardo gets provisionally suspended for shoulder-barge on a referee

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has been provisionally suspended by the French league for his apparently shoulder-barge on referee Alexandre Castro in the tunnel after PSG’s 1-1 draw against Valenciennes.

Harold Cunningham

First Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo asked his Sky Italia presenter girlfriend Anna Billò to marry him live on television. Now Leo has gotten himself and his club in hot water after appearing to shoulder-barge referee Alexandre Castro in the tunnel following PSG’s 1-1 draw over the weekend.

Perhaps the pressure of running a major club is getting to the 43-year-old Brazilian.

As a result of the allegations Leonardo has been provisionally suspended by the league as they continue to investigate the situation. Luckily for them -- and who are we kidding us too -- there’s tape of the incident. Now before you watch take a look at Leonardo’s defense for his actions.

“It’s the delegate in front of me who blocked my path. It’s him who pushed me into the referee.”

“I don’t touch the referee with my shoulder but with my back. Because I was pushed. It is me who was assaulted.”

Alright that’s a reasonable defense right?

Hmm, I don't know about that defense anymore. It looks to me like you just decided to ram your shoulder into the referee. Perhaps Leonardo was upset after Thiago Silva was shown a red card late in the first half and figured it would be a good plan to assault the referee?

Whatever his reasons Leonardo is now in trouble and PSG could be in hot water too. Article 2.9 of the LFP’s rules states that “deliberate barging or attempted punches” towards an official can be punished with a year suspension along with possible point deductions for the club the individual represents.

PSG are in first place, seven points clear of Marseille with three weeks left to play.

It’s not all bad news though for PSG as apparently the league has never deducted points for similar instances in the past. There’s a first time for everything though right?
