SC Freiburg’s tumultuous offseason continued this week with the club confirming two more transfers. The club has signed Mike Hanke from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer, while Cedric Makiadi has exercised a release clause in his contract and joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer.
Freiburg signs Mike Hanke but lose Cedrick Makiadi to Werder Bremen
The ever-changing Freiburg squad saw two more moves this week as they signed Mike Hanke and saw Cedrick Makiadi join Werder Bremen.

Hanke, 29, did not see his contract at Gladbach extended after it expired at the end of this season. With Max Kruse leaving Freiburg for Gladbach, the Foals made the decision that extending Hanke would not be a necessity. With Freiburg in next season’s Europa League, they’ll need a player of Hanke’s experience to help what will likely be a rebuilding side do anything aside from embarrass themselves.
The forward is looking forward to the move:
“It’s a great package here in Freiburg. I had spoken to Christian Streich beforehand and got to know the place, and I think I’ll fit in well here. The opportunity to play in Europe again certainly attracted me, but I also see it as my duty to help the younger players achieve their potential.”
Makiadi, also 29, is joining Werder on a three year deal through 2016 where he’ll join up with his former coach at Freiburg Robin Dutt. He’s now the fifth player to leave Freiburg this summer joining Daniel Caligiuri, Max Kruse, Johannes Flum, and Jan Rosenthal. Werder just managed to avoid relegation this season and will be wanting to move back up to their “rightful” place in the table fighting for Europe and trophies. Makiadi is a good start, but Dutt has his work cut out for him in enhancing this side.
