Eddie Johnson has a goal on his home turf, and the United States look well on their way to coming away from Tuesday night's World Cup qualifier with three points. Panama are in some serious trouble now, down 2-0 after 53 minutes and without their best striker, Blas Perez.
USA vs. Panama: Eddie Johnson makes it 2-0 for the USMNT
While Johnson scored the goal, the assist was just as good. From a deep position in midfield -- right around the halfway line -- Geoff Cameron played a fantastic pass over the top of the Panamanian defense. Johnson timed his diagonal run into the center of the box from the right flank perfectly, staying onside by a step, then controlling Cameron's pass well. Jaime Penedo rushed out, but couldn't stop Johnson from finishing to the back post.
Johnson is in the lineup for Graham Zusi, an entirely different kind of player. Zusi's done a great job in setting up others and helping the U.S. to keep possession, whereas Johnson is more of a speedster and goal-poacher. The USMNT has had to play a different kind of game with him in the team, but it's paid off.
