Lionel Messi settles tax case, say reports

Lionel Messi has reportedly reached an agreement to settle his tax case, according to reports from Catalonia.

Lionel Messi and his father will pay 15m euros in a settlement with the Spanish tax authorities to ensure they will not face charges of tax fraud, according to reports in Catalonia.

Messi and his father had been due to appear in court in September 17 as they were accused of using offshore tax havens to avoid paying dues on image rights, but it now appears the trial will not go ahead after the parties have reached a settlement, according to El Periodico. The deal will be similar to those arranged by the likes of Luis Figo and Davor Suker when they found themselves in similar situations.

Had Messi and his father been found guilty, they could have faced up to five years in prison, although such sentences are very rarely handed out. Club president Sandro Rosell and former president Joan Laporta had supported him in his case, which now seems to be resolved.
