Torsten Frings returns to Werder Bremen as U-23 coach

Torsten Frings will remain involved in football as he returns back to Werder Bremen where he’ll become the co-coach of the club’s U-23 side.

Torsten Frings has been out of football since February of this year, but he's ready to get back involved with the sport. The 36 year old will join up with former teammate Viktor Skripnik as co-coaches to run Werder Bremen's U-23 side.

Frings retired from Toronto FC earlier this year when hip issues no longer allowed him to comfortably play the sport any longer. Starting this month, he will begin the process of obtaining his A and B coaching licenses from UEFA in order to one day serve as a team’s head coach.

Werder’s CEO Klaus Filbry spoke to Bild about the decision to bring Frings in as a coach:

“We are delighted that Torsten will take his first steps as a coach with Werder at the end of his playing career. We’re allowing Torsten to take a hands-on approach to his coach’s training.”

Frings compiled over 300 appearances for Werder in eleven seasons. There was also three season spent at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich sandwiched in there. The former midfielder also made 79 appearances for the German national team.

Robin Dutt was named the club’s new manager after Thomas Schaaf left Werder by mutual consent. However the question must be asked: How far away are we from seeing Torsten Frings on the sideline for Werder?
