Haiti was supposed to be a quick out in the 2013 Gold Cup, but a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Friday night at SunLife Stadium in Miami, FL has them on the verge of a spot in the quarterfinals. Maurice proved to be the hero for Les Grenadiers, scoring both goals to stun the Soca Warriors.

With the win, Haiti sit on three points, which is good for second place in Group B. Honduras lead the group and El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago bring up the rear with a point apiece. If the Haitians can manage a draw against El Salvador on the final matchday, they will likely find themselves in the knockout stages for just the third time in their history.
Interestingly, Trinidad and Tobago struggled with the Haitian speed on the wings. The Soca Warriors have long been known for their speed and physicality, but Les Grenadiers proved better in that aspect and the difference in the match.
Maurice put Haiti in front after just 16 minutes when Jan Williams poorly palmed a 20-yard shot down right in front of goal. From there, all Maurice had to do was tap the ball in and Haiti had themselves a lead.
Haiti’s speed really paid dividends on their second goal, as did a bit of fortune. Trinidad and Tobago got caught out, allowing Haiti to counterattack in the 53rd minute and when Les Grenadiers got going, the Soca Warriors couldn’t stop them. In the blink of an eye, Haiti was putting a cross in from the left and while a sprawling clearance thwarted the first attempt, it ball hit Maurice and went into the net. It wasn’t intentional, but it counted all the same and Haiti was 2-0 up.
Densil Theobald had a chance to get Trinidad and Tobago level just after the break, but it wasn’t to be. His header his the post, Haiti scored their second not 10 minutes later and the Soca Warriors slumped to defeat at the hands of the jubilant Haitians.
