Amidst swirling rumours that Luis Suarez could be departing Anfield, Liverpool have announced rather more positive news. The club have confirmed on their official website that captain Steven Gerrard has signed a contract extension designed to keep him with the Reds until the end of his career. Here is a fluffy quote from the man himself:
Steven Gerrard signs contract extension
Let’s all act surprised that Steven Gerrard is staying with Liverpool!

I think everyone knows what it means to me. I’ve been here that long and so to extend, it’s a big day for me and I’m really happy for myself and my family. It’s great news. It lets me know the club thinks an awful lot of me and want me here.
I’m glad it’s all done and it’s happened at the right time before the season, so I can just focus on playing as well as I can.
Although at times the 33-year-old has appeared a spent force, Gerrard had a strong 2012/13 season and should remain one of the club’s most potent weapons from midfield. If the club can keep hold of Suarez and continue to coax improved performances from Coutinho and Danny Sturridge, the future looks reasonably bright.
