Tito Vilanova steps down as Barcelona manager

Tito Vilanova has left the top job at Barcelona after just a season in charge of the Catalan giants. His replacement is to be announced.

Tito Vilanova has stepped down as the head coach of Barcelona after just one season in charge at the club. The announcement was made at a press conference by club president Sandro Rosell and director Andoni Zubizarreta on Friday evening.

Vilanova missed a large chunk of last season while he was receiving treatment for cancer and has decided to resign his position for health reasons. Assistant ‘Rubi’ Joan Francesc Ferrer, who managed Girona in the Segunda last season, has been rumored as his replacement on an interim basis, but Rosell said that he would not announce a replacement until next week.

Vilanova joined the club as an assistant coach to Pep Guardiola with the Barcelona B side in 2007 and was promoted along with Guardiola to the senior side the next year. He spent three seasons as an assistant to the now Bayern Munich boss, before taking over as the head coach when Guardiola left after the 2011-12 season.

In one year in charge Vilanova led Barcelona to their 22nd La Liga title, their fourth in five seasons. Vilanova was also awarded MARCA’s Miguel Muñoz Trophy as the manager of the year. He missed a large part of the middle of the season after suffering from parotid gland cancer for the second time.
