Let it be said that Sacramento Republic FC is off to an absolutely spectacular start. Over the course of the last few days, the newest USL Pro team has unveiled Preki as their coach, shown off a pretty sweet crest and now released what has to be one of the cooler anthems in American soccer, sung to the tune of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”.
Sacramento Republic FC: Great crest, great name, great song
Within a few days of officially launching, the newest USL Pro team is doing a lot right.
Over the past few months, Sacramento has made a lot of noise about its aspirations of joining MLS. None of these things change my extreme skepticism that is something even remotely possible in the near future (maybe in a world where 30-40 MLS exist across two divisions, but not now), I gotta hand it to them for making the most out of USL Pro.
As a native Californian, I’ve been dying to see a team take what is easily the greatest flag in the history of the world and use that as their theme. So, I’ll admit that maybe I’m coming at this from a biased perspective.
But man, they really are making the most out of it. The colors are true to flag and the song is just catchy enough that I could totally see a whole stadium singing it.
The only thing I don’t like right now is that they’ll be playing in Hughes Stadium, which is a bit cavernous at a capacity of more than 20,000 and has a track circling the field. On the other hand, it is reasonably well located just about 3 miles outside of downtown and within walking distance of a light rail stop.
Maybe these guys are worth paying attention to after all.
