Ryan Giggs named player-coach at Manchester United

So he’ll keep doing pretty much the same thing he already was doing then.

Marco Luzzani

Ryan Giggs has been appointed as player-coach at Manchester United in David Moyes' first move as United manager. Giggs will, unsurprisingly, be working with the first team, and you have to imagine that this announcement is more cosmetic than anything else. After more than 23 seasons with the squad, his influence will already have outstripped that of most coaches around the country, and his actual time on the pitch has become far more limited as he approaches his 40th birthday.

One wonders whether this is the first step towards a genuine managerial career for Giggs, whose Mancunian credentials can't be underplayed. Despite the sordid revelations about his personal life from two years ago, Giggs, who's made almost 1,000 competitive appearance for United, remains enormously popular at Old Trafford. He wouldn't be a bad choice as Moyes' assistant manager in the long-term, especially if the former Everton man stumbles a bit in his first couple of seasons and loses some support from the terraces.

By that point, Giggs will have stopped scoring in every Premier League season. Maybe.
