In a statement on their website, FIFA stated that the suspension prevents the Cameroon Football Association (FECAFOOT) from being represented “in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, or in friendly matches,” due to “government interference.”

The suspension comes amidst chaos surrounding recent presidential elections in the Cameroonian FA, which saw Iya Mohammed reelected, only for FECAFOOT’s Elections Appeals Committee to annul the result. Mohammed is currently in trouble for mismanagement of funds in a state-owned cotton company, with unsuccessful candidate John Begheni Ndeh stepping into the breach on an interim basis.
The suspension is yet more bad news for African football, just after Togo were docked World Cup qualifying points for fielding an ineligible player. That decision benefited Cameroon, with their 2-0 defeat to Togo converted into a 3-0 victory, putting them top of their qualification group. However, they'll have to sort out their current mess if they're to take advantage. Cameroon's final group game -- against Libya -- is scheduled for September.
