Fiorentina confirm signing of Massimo Ambrosini

Fiorentina have snapped up veteran midfielder Massimo Ambrosini, after his contract at AC Milan expired.

Massimo Ambrosini left AC Milan this summer, with the rossoneri captain departing the San Siro after 17 years of service. Despite being 36, he's managed to land himself another contract at one of Serie A's top teams, with Fiorentina announcing the defensive midfielder will join them for the forthcoming season.

Superficially it looks an odd signing, with the veteran clearly no longer deemed fit for purpose by Milan. However, with Fiorentina looking set to lose their current defensive anchorman Giulio Migliaccio -- who, after a frustrating 2012-13 has been linked with a move to Genoa -- bringing Ambrosini to the Artemio Franchi could be a smarter move than it looks.

With coach Vincenzo Montella showing a preference for playing as many creative central midfielders as possible, Ambrosini will definitely not be a regular starter. But, as a player to throw on when trying to protect a lead, the experienced Ambrosini could be useful yet.
