Bayern Munich agree to sell Mario Gomez to Fiorentina

When Fiorentina finally sell Stevan Jovetic, they’ll have a wonderful ready-made replacement.

Alexander Hassenstein

Bayern Munich announced early on Monday that they have agreed to a deal in principle to sell striker Mario Gomez to Fiorentina. With Mario Götze arriving this summer and Robert Lewandowski all but certain to join up on a free transfer next summer, Gomez was deemed expendable by Pep Guardiola and the Bayern front office. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but his sale price has been previously rumored to be €18 million.

Other clubs have shown interest in Gomez, but he reportedly agreed to personal terms with the Viola long ago and was set on making a move to Florence. The club simply had to meet Bayern’s asking price, which they have done.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge noted Gomez’s exceptional goal-scoring record in the Bundesliga while heaping praise on Gomez in a release from the club. “I’d like to thank him for his performance and all he’s done for Bayern,” said Rummenigge. “On behalf of Bayern Munich, I wish him good luck and success in Florence.”

This transfer almost certainly paves the way for Fiorentina to sell Stevan Jovetic, given they can find a suitor to meet their asking price. Fiorentina are in good financial shape and won’t run into serious problems if they can’t sell Jovetic, but they don’t exactly have huge money to throw around. His market seems to have dissipated, with Juventus signing Carlos Tevez and Arsenal aggressively pursuing Gonzalo Higuain, but it’s hard to believe that Fiorentina would make this move unless they were close to selling Jovetic. Gomez could make for a compliment to Jovetic, but it’s more likely he’s a replacement.
