Klaas Jan Huntelaar out several weeks with knee injury

Schalke forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar will be out for several weeks after picking up a knee injury against Wolfsburg.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar has been ruled out for several weeks after picking up a knee injury in Schalke's 4-0 loss against Wolfsburg on Saturday. The forward has suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. The injury occurred in the first half of the match when Huntelaar collided with Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio.

The official Bundesliga website is stating that Huntelaar will be out "at least" four weeks. Let's put him out through Schalke's league match on September 21. This would see him miss league matches against Hannover, Bayer Leverkusen, Mainz, and Bayern Munich. He would also miss out on Schalke's Champions League qualifier against PAOK scheduled for this week and next. Advancing to the group stage of the Champions League is worth €20 million.

Well, thank goodness Schalke went out and spent money this summer. Last season, with Huntelaar not involved in a game, Schalke would have been forced to rely on either Ciprian Marica or Teemu Pukki. When Schalke went and purchased Adam Szalai from Mainz this summer, it was immediately hailed by everyone as a huge move for the club heading into this season. The 25 year old scored 13 goals for Mainz last year and should be able to step up and adequately fill in for Huntelaar over the next several weeks.
