1860 Munich supporters allegedly hurl racist insults toward Ingolstadt’s Danny da Costa

1860 Munich supporters allegedly hurled racist insults toward Ingolstadt defender Danny da Costa.

Nobody ever wants to sit here and talk about racist chants from fans, but here we are being forced to do it. According to Ingolstadt’s Ralph Gunesch, 1860 Munich supporters are guilty of hurling racist insults in Sunday’s Bavarian derby. The victim of said insults is Ingolstadt defender (on loan from Bayer Leverkusen) Danny da Costa.

At one point late in the match, the referee was speaking with players on both sides before speaking with one of his assistant referees. The match continued, but what was actually under discussion at the time was unclear. It appears that we now have our answer.

This was brought to everyone’s attention via a Facebook posting from Ingolstadt centerback Ralph Gunesch. The specific things mentioned by Gunesch were monkey noises and chants of “go back to the bush” and “sh*t n****r”. Gunesch ended the posting with the following: “Racism is not an opinion, but a crime.”

While the incidents involving more high profile players in Italy and England last season received more attention, we should not hesitate to point out despicable actions by others when they do occur. Hopefully, the 1860 supporters that were involved in any racist chanting are found and handed a lifetime ban. Racism in any way, shape, or form is unacceptable, and hopefully the DFB and DFL continue to work toward completely stamping it out of the game.
