Borussia Mönchengladbach will soon move to extend Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s contract

There have been rumors of his departure for a while now, but Borussia Mönchengladbach will soon move to extend the contract of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Borussia Mönchengladbach will soon move forward to extend the contract of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. His current contract is set to expire in June 2015. While there has been a lot of speculation around the future of Ter Stegen, including leaving this summer, getting him to sign an extension for a few additional years would be huge.

Ter Stegen, 21, has been one of the Bundesliga's three best goalkeepers over the last three seasons along with Manuel Neuer and Roman Weidenfeller. This season started roughly with a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich, but Ter Stegen and Gladbach rebounded on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Hannover.

Sporting director Max Eberl said that the club will actually sit down with Ter Stegen and his representative this week to begin discussing a possible extension. Eberl then joked that he would like Ter Stegen to stay at Gladbach “forever - like Sepp Maier at Bayern Munich”. Maier, you’ll recall, spent his entire 17 year professional career in goal for Bayern winning the Bundesliga four times, the DFB Pokal four times, and the European Cup three times.

He’s been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, but nothing to this point has materialized. Of course, even if Ter Stegen signs an extension past 2015, it doesn’t mean that he will remain in Gladbach. It does, however, like mean an increase in any transfer fee that Die Fohlen may receive for Ter Stegen.
