Lionel Messi injury: Barcelona star doubtful to play vs. Malaga

Barcelona have yet to decide if Lionel Messi will play this weekend at Malaga.

Lionel Messi has a bruise on the femoral biceps tendon in his left thigh and is doubtful to play on Sunday when Barcelona take on Malaga, the club announced. Barcelona did not rule out Messi playing this weekend, saying that their medical staff will monitor his status for the rest of the week before making a final decision on his availability.

Messi was substituted off at halftime of Wednesday’s Supercopa first leg at Atletico Madrid after he complained of pain in his thigh. The club quickly confirmed that he had suffered a contusion, but they did not comment on the seriousness of the injury or provide a timeline for his return until Friday’s update.

If Messi is unable to play on Sunday, the team will likely tap Cesc Fabregas to take his place, as they did on Wednesday when Fabregas replaced the Argentine. The team had no problem scoring in their La Liga opener against Levante, a 7-0 win, as opposed to Malaga's 1-0 loss to Valencia, and while this match is at La Rosaleda, Barcelona won both of their matches at Malaga last year.
