Borussia Dortmund may have controlled the match against Werder Bremen on Friday, but they once again had to wait until the second half to get on the scoresheet. A Robert Lewandowski tap-in was the difference as Jürgen Klopp’s side now has nine points out of nine.

While their finishing failed them for a majority of the match, Borussia Dortmund edged Werder Bremen 1-0 on a goal from Robert Lewandowski.

With over 56% of the possession and 25 more shots than Werder, BVB should’ve won this match running away. Things probably would’ve gotten out of hand early in match, if not for Sebastian Mielitz. The Werder goalkeeper did well to keep BVB out in the opening minutes, especially Marco Reus. The midfielder was up to his usually fantastic play throughout the match and had several near-misses in the first half.
BVB spent the majority of the match camped out in Werder’s half of the field and made Die Werderaner look every bit of the relegation candidate that we thought they would be at the start of the season. They may have managed to survive the big pushes from Eintracht Braunschweig and Augsburg in their first two matches this season, once BVB finally started moving the ball around with precision, Werder’s defense collapsed.
Kevin Großkreutz fed to Reus as he was running past the Werder defense. The midfielder then laid the ball across the face of goal to Lewandowski who only needed to tap the ball into an open net to give Die Borussen the 1-0 lead, and they would ride that scoreline until the end of the match.
While three wins out of three is great for any team, we should keep BVB’s wins in perspective. They were against Augsburg, Braunschweig, and Werder. All three of those teams are relegation candidates. Klopp and company will need to be concerned about what seems to be an inability to truly break teams down in the first half. Things to work on for BVB, to be sure, but a win’s a win.
I believe that, if given the option, Werder would’ve taken six points out of their first nine to start the season. Quite frankly, they’re just not a good team, yet they’ve somehow managed to concede only one goal this season. This flummoxes me considering Sebastian Prödl and Mielitz are starters for this team. Oh well, they’re happy with their first three games.
