West Brom’s Ben Foster out 12 weeks with stress fracture

Ben Foster will be out until at least November with a stress fracture in his right foot.

West Bromwich Albion will be without Ben Foster for up to 12 weeks after the goalkeeper suffered a stress fracture in his foot. Foster came off in the 77th minute of the Baggies' 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday and a scan showed the extent of the injury. He will undergo surgery this week.

“There’s no hiding the fact this is disappointing news, as Ben is a key player for us,” said West Brom manager Steve Clarke. “He was excellent on Saturday before his injury forced him off. In the meantime, I’ve got two other very good goalkeepers to choose from.”

With Foster out, West Brom will turn to either Boaz Myhill or Luke Daniels in goal. Myhill has experience, having started for Hull City in the Premier League, as well as for Wales internationally, but he's played just 14 matches since joining the Baggies in 2010 and just returned from a wrist injury. Daniels, a Manchester United and West Brom academy product, made his first-team debut on Saturday when he replaced Foster after spending the last five years on loan at a slew of lower division clubs.

Foster's injury is also a blow to England. With Joe Hart struggling, the starting goalkeeper spot is hardly secured and Foster, who Roy Hodgson has called his No. 2, could have certainly challenged Hart. He will still have the opportunity to do so ahead of the 2014 World Cup, but it will be tougher for him to do so now, especially because he will miss at least the Three Lions' next four matches and possibly their next six.
