United States clinches place in 2014 FIFA World Cup

The United States is going to Brazil after their win over Mexico and a bit of help elsewhere in CONCACAF.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Thanks to their 2-0 win over Mexico and Panama drawing against Honduras, the United States has become the first team from CONCACAF to clinch their place in the 2014 World Cup.

The USA got off to a slow start in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the World Cup. An opening match loss away against Honduras in February had fans nervous, despite only one game being played. The US looked better in March with a win over Costa Rica and a draw in Azteca Stadium against Mexico, and scored two wins in June against Jamaica and Panama.

Tuesday's result against Mexico was probably the sweetest of them all, with Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan scoring to sink El Tri.

Friday's loss against Costa Rica turned out to be just a temporary setback in terms of overall qualification, and Jurgen Klinsmann's team can now begin looking ahead to next summer in Brazil. This is the USMNT's seventh straight trip to the World Cup.
