Bundesliga Wrap, Week 5: Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Schalke all win

Stuttgart’s resurgence under new head coach Thomas Schneider with a big 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin at the Olympic Stadium to give the capital side their first loss at home since the promotion/relegation playoff at the end of the 2011-2012 season. That’s a pretty good run. Stuttgart’s goal came just after halftime. Christian Gentner’s flick header past Thomas Kraft in the 49th minute gave Stuttgart their second straight win after three losses to open the season.

Werder lost their third in a row after their two opening wins against “lesser” opposition. Vaclav Kadlec might just be the scoring punch up top that Frankfurt desperately need. If he can keep scoring goals for Frankfurt throughout the season, things could get very interesting for that fourth and final spot in next season’s Champions League.

Kevin Prince Boateng’s first goal for Schalke was the game winner in a big match against a quality Mainz team. Schalke withstood the early Mainz onslaught, and Boateng scored his goal in the 34th minute with a nice curling shot out of the reach of Heinz Müller.

Augsburg grabbed their third win in a row. Tobias Werner’s 89th minute winner lifted Markus Weinzierl’s side while deflating Freiburg. The loss keeps the Europa League club in 17th place with only two points on the season. Christian Streich needs to figure things out quickly, or his team will be in this relegation battle all season long.

BVB put an absolute pounding on Hamburg to stay top of the table. After losing both matches to Hamburg last season, Jürgen Klopp’s side had to be feeling the nerves a little bit as the hour mark creeped past with the score level at two. Unfortunately for Thorsten Fink’s team, there was still another half hour to play. Dortmund banged four goals past Rene Adler in the final thirty minutes including a brace by Robert Lewandowski.

Hoffenheim continued their good start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Mönchengladbach. Without Roberto Firmino (three goals and three assists), one would imagine that Gladbach’s defense would be able to handle the Hoffenheim attack. Not to be the case with Kevin Volland putting together a great performance on the day. Anthony Modeste opened the scoring with a header just before the halftime whistle. Volland made it 2-0 in the 54th minute. Branimir Hrgota scored in the 75th minute, but it was only a consolation goal for Gladbach.

Braunschweig finally picked up their first point of the season with a draw against Nürnberg. However, it was Nürnberg that jumped out to a lead at the half hour mark when Adam Hlousek scored Timothy Chandler’s cross. It wasn’t until the 70th minute when Braunschweig found their equalizer, but Omar Elabdellaoui’s goal was well deserved for the home side.
