Roberto Martinez is readying a raid on former club Wigan Athletic, according to the Daily Mail. Everton are apparently on the verge of signing young midfielder James McCarthy, having agreed a £12.5 million deal with the Latics.
Rumour: Everton, Wigan agree McCarthy fee
James McCarthy could be on his way to Goodison Park asreports have Wigan Athletic and Everton agreeing to a £12.5 million deal.

That won't be a move to reinforce the centre, of course -- if the Toffees are coming in for McCarthy, it'll be because they expect a central midfielder to depart. That means Marouane Fellaini is likely on his way out, presumably to Manchester United.
Of course, this could simply be a contingency plan should United meet Everton's asking price for Fellaini, ensuring that Martinez doesn't get caught cold when the window closes. The two teams agreeing a deal doesn't necessarily mean that one's going to go through, and it makes sense for the Toffees to be prepared with United lurking.
McCarthy’s no Fellaini, but he’s already shown his stuff in the Premier League and looks more than good enough to take the step to a team that expects to contend for a European place.
