Bundesliga Wrap, Week 6: Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen win to keep up with Borussia Dortmund

This match wasn’t likely to have any other ending. Eintracht Braunschweig are a really good/great 2.Bundesliga team. Unfortunately, this season they’re competing in the Bundesliga. It was always going to be a tough task for them to win away to Borussia Mönchengladbach, but boy did Gladbach make it look easy. Raffael scored twice to lead Die Fohlen on the night. Somehow, Gladbach snagged next Friday’s match also, and they’ll visit Augsburg. Lucien Favre’s side have yet to win away from home this season, so the match should be an interesting one.

Back from his red card suspension, Szabolcs Huszti secured all three points for Hannover with a goal in the 89th minute to see Die Roten to victory on the day. It’s Hannover’s fourth win out of four at home so far this season, and it ends Augsburg’s winning streak. Hannover have yet to win away from home in forever, and they’ll have the opportunity next weekend with a visit to Bayer Leverkusen. Yeah, it’s not going to be easy.

Ivica Olic scored twice to put Wolfsburg in a Europa League place at the end of the day. It’s a big win over a Hoffenheim side that has shown a penchant of scoring goals even though they concede them easier than anyone else, too.

After their disaster against Napoli in Italy on Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund were hoping for an easier go of things back in Germany against Nürnberg. Due to the Champions League game this week and the DFB Pokal matches next week, Jürgen Klopp chose to do a little bit of squad rotation and paid for it at the end of the day. Marcel Schmelzer did score a sweet free kick in the first half, but Per Nilsson scored in the second half to earn Nürnberg a point.

Hamburg sacked Thorsten Fink just days before the Nordderby against Werder Bremen. They were hoping for that “sacked manager bump” that a lot of teams get. Unfortunately for Hamburg, Nils Petersen had other ideas, and the forward score twice to give Werder their third victory of the season. Seriously. They have 9 points. I have no idea.

Schalke started strong but faded very quickly and very hard. Bayern were up 2-0 just after the 20th minute with two goals in rapid succession, and they never looked back.

Freiburg disappointed their supporters midweek by giving up a two goal lead to draw with Slovan Liberec in the UEFA Europa League. The league campaign hasn’t started brightly, but at the end of Sunday they do have one point more than they had when the day started. After last season and the summer of losing players, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Freiburg. They jumped out to an early lead thanks to Admir Mehmedi, but Per Skjelbred equalized to give Hertha their first goal since Matchday 3.

Stuttgart should’ve walked away with all three points on the day, but Vedad Ibisevic had one of the worst outings of his career. The forward missed several surefire goals, had a Alexandru Maxim goal called back due to his offside, and missed a penalty in the dying seconds of the match. It wasn’t a good day for the Bosnian as Stuttgart were celebrating their 120th year as a club. The point means both sides end the day on 7.
