DFB Pokal Second Round, Wednesday Recap: Bayern Munich, Schalke advance to third round
Bayern Munich and Schalke won on Wednesday to advance to the third round of the DFB Pokal.


1. FC Saarbrücken 2-1 SC Paderborn
The 3.Liga side pulled the upset on the day thanks to a first half brace from Thomas Rathgeber. Mahir Saglik pulled one back for Paderborn in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. Saarbrücken held on for the victory to advance to the third round.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 VfL Bochum
Takashi Inui scored a goal and assisted on another in a two minute span during the first half of Frankfurt’s 2-0 win over Bochum. They had several opportunities in the second half to add to their total, but they still eased to victory.
FSV Frankfurt 0-2 Ingolstadt
Tamas Hajnal scored in the first half and turned provider to Philipp Hofmann’s second half goal to lead “the other” Frankfurt side to victory.
1. FC Kaiserslautern 3-1 Hertha Berlin
Peter Niemeyer gave Hertha Berlin the 1-0 halftime lead, leaving the visitors fairly confident heading into the second half. However, the second half belonged to FCK. Die Roten Teufel exploded for three goals from Mohamadou Idrissou, Karim Matmour, and Olivier Occean to secure the 3-1 victory over the Bundesliga club and advance to the third round of the competition.
VfL Osnabrück 0-1 Union Berlin
Union made a 14th minute penalty from Torsten Mattuschka stand up for the remainder of the match to see the 2.Bundesliga side into the next round.
Darmstadt 09 1-3 Schalke 04
Schalke had to work hard for it on the day, but they eventually walked away 3-1 winners over 3.Liga side Darmstadt. Jefferson Farfan scored the first goal for Die Königsblauenin the 35th minute, Darmstadt were quick to equalize just one minute later through Hanover Behrens. Schalke regained the lead in the 58th minute on a Benedikt Höwedes header. However, they weren’t able to put the match to bed until the 86th minute when Max Meyer put the third goal in the net.
Bayern Munich 4-1 Hannover 96
Bayern Munich scored twice in each half to easily dispatch of Hannover 4-1 and move on to the third round of the competition. Thomas Müller scored a goal in each half while Claudio Pizarro grabbed one in the first and Franck Ribery in the second. The four goals sandwiched a goal by Didier Ya Konan in the 37th minute. Bayern are beginning to get healthy and are now finding their stride. Watch out, Europe.
SC Freiburg 2-1 VfB Stuttgart
Freiburg took a 2-0 lead into the final minutes of the match through goals from Matthias Ginter and Mike Hanke. They managed to withstand a furious Stuttgart comeback including a goal from Vedad Ibisevic. They held on to win 2-1 to advance to the third round. Freiburg will be hoping that the win helps to kickstart their league campaign.
