Lionel Messi injury update: Barcelona will be without star for 2-3 weeks

Denis Doyle

Lionel Messi turns out to be human after all. The Barcelona star was forced off in the 28th minute of his side's 2-0 win against Almeria on Saturday, and the club have now confirmed that the 26-year-old will miss the next few weeks:

Leo Messi has a small injury to the biceps femoris [thigh] in his right leg. This was confirmed by medical tests undertaken by the player on Sunday morning at Medical Services Sport City. The Argentinian will be out for approximately two to three weeks, which will certainly force him to miss Barcelona's two games this week - on Tuesday against Celtic and next Saturday at the Camp Nou against Valladolid.

Obviously, it could be a lot worse, but missing Messi for any length of time is bad, both for the club and neutrals who enjoy watching him (but it’s great news for Celtic!). Happily for Barcelona, there’s an international break coming up, and with Argentina already through to Brazil 2014, that means Messi will have plenty of time to rest.
