Cristiano Ronaldo missed a glorious opportunity to give his team the lead in the 19th minute. Karim Benzema used some lovely ball control skill to settle the ball as be moved into the Espanyol box. Because it’s somewhat amusing to mention, Ronaldo was denied yet again in the 81st minute when Casilla made a tremendous one-handed stop from near point blank range.
Javi López had one last chance in stoppage time to steal a point for the home side but his shot from outside the box curled wide of the post.
