Copa del Rey: Round of 16 concludes this week with second leg matches

The Copa del Rey lumbers forward with a busy mid-wee schedule that will determine the final eight teams in this year’s competition.

Spain is keeping everyone busy as the Copa del Rey eats up the mid-week, sandwiched between two full weekends of normal league play. 14 top flight teams remain alive in the tournament but several will be out after this round of second leg matches.

The most interesting tie in terms of results from the first leg is Espanyol vs. AC Alcorcón, which is led 1-0 by the Alfareros thanks to a 1-0 home win in the first leg the second division side. Given that the second leg is back in Barcelona, Espanyol remain favorites to advance but fans of upsets and chaos will likely be rooting for Alcorcón.

Four of the eight ties are even after the first leg including Atlético Madrid vs. Valencia and Villarreal vs. Real Sociedad. The match between La Real and the Yellow Submarine will have an interesting storyline after Monday's league match between the two sides. Villarreal crushed La Real 5-1 which should have Jagoba Arrasate's side looking for a measure of revenge.

Barcelona is the one team that is all but guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals after they thumped Getafe 4-0 in the first leg. Given the busy schedule that Barca is dealing with, it's likely that Gerardo Martino will rest some starters with the comfortable advantage. Real Madrid are also in reasonably good shape, leading Osasuna 2-0 after the first leg in Madrid.

Here’s the fully schedule for all the second leg matches this week.
