Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed as Cardiff City manager

The former Manchester United reserves coach and Molde boss will finally get his shot at Premier League management.

Alex Grimm

Just under six years after he became Manchester United's reserve manager under Alex Ferguson, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given his first shot at management in the Premier League. Owner Vincent Tan has called on him to replace Malky Mackay at Cardiff City, who are in the midst of a difficult regulation battle.

Solskjaer has been marked as a potential future manager since his retirement in 2007, but he has taken the time to learn the ropes. He managed the Manchester United reserves from 2008 until 2011, when he took a management job with Norwegian side Molde, whom he played for before signing for the Red Devils. In his time with the club, Solskjaer won a trophy in each season, capturing the Norwegian Premier League title in 2011 and 2012 as well as the Norwegian Cup in 2013.

The 40-year-old Norwegian checks all the boxes that an ambitious owner looks for in a new hire. He’s young, he played at the highest level, he learned the profession under a legend and he’s won trophies since breaking away from his mentor. Solskjaer’s resume is very good, but he will face a tough task in turning around a struggling Cardiff side that just sacked their best ever manager in a move very much against the wishes of the fans.
