Liverpool have fallen behind in the title race with some average results over their last five games and they’ve just been dealt another massive blow. According to the Liverpool Echo, defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva will miss two months with a knee ligament injury.

Lucas came on at halftime in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, but picked up an injury and was forced to exit before the game ended. He’s been injured off and on over the last two seasons after recovering from a devastating knee injury in late 2011, but he’s been a consistent performer for Liverpool this season, appearing in 19 league games.
Without Lucas, Brendan Rodgers turned to Steven Gerrard in a holding role last weekend, and he’s hinted that the move may be a permanent one. Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson aren’t exactly suited to the role either, so there’s no perfect solution, but Gerrard is considerably less mobile and defensively adept than the man he’s going to be asked to replace.
