Bayern Munich are set to expand Allianz Arena in part to make the stadium suitable to host the Euro 2020 final. Being the best club in the world with a fan base big enough to fill more seats with ease helps too, so regardless of whether the stadium is selected by UEFA to host the final, Bayern will expand the stadium to 75,000.
“We will do all we can do increase the capacity of the arena,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told Muenchener Merkur. “It looks like we’ll have a capacity of 75,000.”
The expansion will see some of the free steps in the stadium’s upper tier turned into seats. The club will also add about 2,000 standing places, not that they could be used as such for the Euros anyway.
Euro 2020 will take place throughout Europe, with matches all over the continent. Countries can only submit one stadium to host and Germany is putting forth the Allianz Arena with a package A bid that would see them host three group stage matches, a round of 16 match and a quarterfinal, as well as a package B bid, which is the right to host the semifinals and final.
Regardless, Bayern Munich's home is getting bigger. The empire is growing and I, for one, welcome our new Bavarian overlords.
