Jakub Blaszczykowski out for the season with torn ACL

Borussia Dortmund’s star winger won’t be able to help his team secure top four in the Bundesliga or make a repeat Champions League run.

Dennis Grombkowski

Borussia Dortmund feared the worst when Jakub Blaszczykowski went down injured on Saturday afternoon, and their worst fears have now been confirmed. Their star winger is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering an ACL tear in the match against Augsburg.

'Kuba' had a brilliant campaign last season, scoring 11 league goals, but he's scored just twice in the Bundesliga this season. Still, he's a key fixture in a team that has been ravaged by injuries. The fullback position, in particular, has been decimated, forcing his primary backup Kevin Großkreutz to start in that position on a regular basis. Kuba was replaced by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Saturday.

Unlike the last three seasons, when they've sat near the top of the table, Dortmund have struggled this year. They're still sitting in third place, on track to qualify for Champions League, but they're 14 points behind leaders Bayern Munich and only three points ahead of fifth-placed Wolfsburg, who are spending big in this transfer window. Their bitter rivals, Schalke, are just five points behind them, in seventh place.
