It was an interesting Tuesday in the Premier League as the league leaders were held to a draw, Liverpool absolutely embarrassed Everton in the Merseyside Derby and there were double red cards in the Newcastle/Norwich City match for a bit of fisticuffs.
Premier League wrap: Liverpool crush Everton, Arsenal held by Southampton
The league leaders Arsenal are in danger of dropping out of the top spot after a draw against Southampton. United got a big win over Cardiff and Liverpool destroyed Everton in the Merseyside Derby.
The return of Robin Van Persie from injury helped spoiled the return of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Old Trafford as United picked up a much-needed win over Cardiff City. Van Persie's 5th minute goal after a goal mouth scramble gave David Moyes' side a solid start and Ashley Young finished things off in the second half with an missile strike of his own to put the match away.
Norwich City 0-0 Newcastle United
Despite 22 shots on goal Newcastle United couldn't solve Norwich's defense and were forced to settle for a scoreless draw. Perhaps the most interesting moment of the game occurred in the 82nd minute when Newcastle's Loic Remy and the Canaries' Bradley Johnson were both shown straight red cards for fighting.
Southampton 2-2 Arsenal
Southampton took an early lead, let Arsenal come back a take a 2-1 lead of their own, only to snatch a goal back and earn a point against the league leaders. Jose Fonte's 21st minute strike put Soton ahead but Arsenal roared back thanks early second half goals from Olivier Giroud and Santi Corzola. The lead only lasted two minutes though as Adam Lallana pulled Soton back even. Mathieu Flaimini was shown a straight red card with 10 minutes to play
Swansea 2-0 Fulham
Second half goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Chico gave Swansea an important victory in a battle between two potential relegation battlers. With the victory the Swans create a little cushion between themselves and the drop zone while Fulham could find themselves in the bottom three if West Ham or Sunderland get a positive result on Wednesday.
Palace picked up a massive three points thanks to a 16th minute strike from Jason Puncheon. With all three subs used, Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor was shown a red card two minutes into stoppage time, forcing Tom Huddlestone to finish the match between the pipes.
Liverpool 4-0 Everton
Liverpool hammered their city rivals 4-0, putting their boot on Everton's throat early and slowly pressing harder until the Toffees were good and dead by the final whistle. Steven Gerrard scored with a header off a corner in the 20th minute to open the floodgates and Daniel Sturridge scored a brace in two minutes late in the first half. Luis Saurez added a fourth in the second half but it could have been even worse as Sturridge missed a penalty as well.
