Giuseppe Rossi injury: Fiorentina striker may return before end of season

It looks like the striker will avoid surgery as he continues to recover from his knee injury.

Giuseppe Rossi is showing improvement in his recovery from a knee injury and could be back on a field in two months, Fiorentina announced Tuesday. It is still unclear when Rossi might return to matches, but if he can resume light training by late March, he will have a realistic opportunity to play again before the end of the season.

Rossi suffered a knee injury on January 5 and it was immediately feared that he had torn the ligaments, but the initial diagnosis was just a sprain. The hope was that with rest and rehabilitation, he could get back to full fitness without surgery and with his knee now “showing a good level of stability,” it looks like that will prove to be true.

While torn knee ligaments and reconstructive surgery are terrible for any player, it is especially bad for Rossi, who has already undergone two operations to repair torn cruciate ligaments in his career.

Despite having missed the last three weeks, Rossi still leads Serie A with 14 goals, but Fiorentina have taken Alessandro Matri on loan and are doing pretty well without Rossi.

Fiorentina have pulled five points from their three matches since Rossi went down, including three goals in each of their last two matches. They currently sit fourth in the league, just three points behind Napoli for the final Champions League place.
