The deal also includes an option to buy the player, believed to be for the sum of £8m.
With Alan Pardew's men having lost their best player in Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain, this is unlikely to be the last deal the club will make in the window, and the club had been linked with a move for the Dutch striker for a while. De Jong, brother of Siem de Jong at Ajax, was successful in the Eredivisie but failed to replicate his prolific goalscoring in Germany.
De Jong said: “Newcastle is a great club and I have a good feeling about it.I am very impressed with the stadium and training ground and have been made to feel very welcome by everyone I have met.
“It has been a tough season for me so far but I am here to play games and want to be important for the team, and successful with goals and assists. I am really looking forward to playing for Newcastle.”
