Marc-André ter Stegen rejects Gladbach extension, seems set for Barcelona

Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced that goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will not renew his contract with the club, with a summer move to Barcelona now almost certain.

In not-very-unexpected news Borussia Mönchengladbach have confirmed that goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will not renew his contract with the club, with his departure to Barcelona now looking certain. ter Stegen’s current deal doesn’t expire until 2015, though the Bundesliga outfit are expected to cash in on him at the end of the season.

Gladbach confirmed the news in a statement on their official website, on which ter Stegen was quoted as saying:

“I have thought long and told the club that I do not want to renew my contract at the present time. I am Borusse through-and-through so the decision was not easy ... but I hope the fans will understand and accept it.”

Sporting director Max Eberl added that the move wasn’t a surprise, with ter Stegen having been strongly linked with a move to Barça for quite a while. With the Spanish club’s current first-choice Victor Valdés leaving at the end of the season, they’ve had ample time to find a replacement, and with 21-year-old ter Stegen one of the brightest young keepers around at the moment, they seem to have chosen well.
