Bayern midfielder Thiago Alcântara re-injures knee, requires another surgery

The Spaniard, who has yet to play for Bayern Munich this season, will be out for an undetermined length of time.

Thiago Alcântara once again faces a long injury layoff after re-injuring ligaments in his right knee. The Bayern Munich midfielder partially tore the ligaments during practice on Tuesday, and will require surgery.

The 23-year-old has had a rough time of it, injury-wise, since joining the Bavarian side from Barcelona in 2013. Last March, his first season for Bayern was cut short when he first injured his knee. Thiago attempted a return in May, but a setback meant surgery, leaving him unable to play in the World Cup -- perhaps, in hindsight, a positive for the Spaniard.

There are no details yet regarding how long Thiago will be out, only that he faces a “lengthy recovery.” The Spaniard has yet to make an appearance in the Bundesliga this season, having only returned to practice last week. Meanwhile, life in Munich continues as normal, with Bayern sitting four points clear at the top of the table and having yet to lose a match.
