Stephen Keshi, Nigeria part ways

With the Super Eagles sitting third in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, Stephen Keshi is out, and former coach Shaibu Amodu will take charge of Nigeria’s final two ACON qualifiers.

Nigeria beat Sudan 3-1 on Wednesday night, but that wasn't enough to stem the bleeding. The Super Eagles have confirmed the departure of coach Stephen Keshi, who arrived in 2011 and led the team to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

Keishi went on to take Nigeria into the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup, where they were knocked out by France in the Round of 16. The 52-year-old resigned after the tournament, but agreed to stay on after his contract was renewed. His interest, however, seems to have waned, and Nigeria have picked up just four points from their first four group stage matches. They now sit third in Group A, four points behind leaders South Africa and three behind Congo, who they'll have to best to qualify for the finals.

Shaibu Amodu, who has taken charge of Nigeria on three separate occasions, most recently from 2008-2010, will assume the reigns for the final group stage games, against Congo and South Africa. Amodu has seen success in domestic club football and has led Nigeria to third place in ACON on two separate occasions, in 2002 and 2010.
