Referee gets punched in head while surrounded by riot police
The riot police were supposed to protect the referees. Instead they just became bystanders to a club staff member punching the referee.
Peruvian side San Simon were upset after the referee awarded a late free kick, which Sporting Cristal scored off of to win 3-2. Their players and staff then bombarded the officials and riot police stepped in to protect them. That should have been that, but instead, they just became statues with helmets and shields who watched a referee get punched.
That is absolutely frightening and one would think that San Simon will be punished harshly for it. Thankfully, the referee appeared to have avoided major injury.
Why would anyone want to be a ref?
