A brace from Wilfried Bony was enough for Swansea City to pick up a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Leicester City in Saturday's late Premier League kickoff. The Swans' victory was their first in five league matches, while the Foxes slumped to their fourth game without a win.
Swansea City vs. Leicester City: Final score 2-0, Bony leads Swans to routine win
Wilfried Bony netted a brace as Swansea arrested their slide at home to Leicester City.
The first half was a pretty forgettable affair, with Swansea dominating possession but struggling to break through Leicester’s disciplined defensive ranks. The hosts saw plenty of the ball, but in the congestion of the midfield they failed to find a route through to Kasper Schmeichel’s goal.
That was until a sublime interchange between striker Wilfried Bony and playmaking midfielder Gylfi Sigurðsson with just over 10 minutes of the half remaining, with the former completing a one-two with the latter on the edge of the penalty area before slotting the ball calmly into the Foxes’ net.
Swansea held their lead through to the halftime whistle, though very almost lost it in comedic fashion within a couple of minutes of the restart. Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey wafted his leg in the direction of a long Leicester throw-in, which proceeded to skim off the turf and towards goal, with only the crossbar sparing the hosts’ blushes.
Leicester were certainly more proactive after the restart, but they couldn't convert their increased share of possession into anything meaningful. Instead, it just left them more exposed at the back. They paid a heavy price with Swansea sliced through them just short of the hour, with Jefferson Montero rolling the ball across for Bony to tap home for 2-0.
They almost added a third within minutes when Shelvey let fly from distance just past the hour, though his dipping effort clipped the top of Schmeichel’s crossbar before bouncing clear. Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez responded with a drilled long-distance shot moments later, though it flashed wide of Łukasz Fabiański’s post.
Despite Leicester boss Nigel Pearson switching things up with a triple substitution with just over 20 minutes left, the Foxes struggled to get back into the game. It took them until stoppage time to create a clear-cut opportunity, though Esteban Cambiasso couldn’t convert after a loose ball fell to him in the penalty area in the 91st minute, and Swansea held on for a deserved victory.
