South Africa captain and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot dead, police have announced. The 27-year-old was reportedly at his girlfriend’s house in Vosloorus, Gauteng province, when he was attacked by men in what local media claim was an attempted burglary.

Three attackers are said to have fled on foot after the incident, with the South African police offering a reward of around $14,000 for information leading to their arrest.

The chairman of Orlando Pirates, Dr Irvin Khoza, commented:

“This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it - to Senzo’s family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and to the nation.”

Meyiwa had been South Africa's first-choice goalkeeper since being handed the gloves in the absence of the injured Itumeleng Khune, though he impressed so much that he kept the gloves and was handed the captain's armband. He was yet to concede in the country's African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
