Cornella vs. Real Madrid: Final score 1-4, Los Blancos too much for Cornella

Real Madrid will return to the Bernabéu for the second leg with a comfortable lead thanks to a brace from Raphaël Varane.

Real Madrid got a slight scare from third division side Cornella in their Copa del Rey Round of 32 first leg match, but in the end they were able to overwhelm the smaller club for a 4-1 win.

Madrid took the lead in the 9th minute off a James Rodriguez acorner kick when Raphaël Varane got up and over a Conrella defender at close range. The young Madrid defender powered a header past Iñigo Alberto, giving the heavy favorites a 1-0 lead.

Cornella responded in the 20th minute when a goal of their own as Madrid’s defense fell apart, allowing Óscar Muñoz to split the central defenders and beat Keylor Navas. Poor clearances led to the chance as the ball fell to Muñoz on the edge of the Madrid box. He spun past Alvaro Arbelos, using his body to shield him from the ball and beat Navas with a rising shot.

Ten minutes before half it was again Varane making a nuisance of himself on a set piece to put Madrid back in front. This time, Isco delivered the corner and the defender made a late run, flying in over Cornella defenders to direct another headers past Alberto.

Madrid’s third goal came from Chicharito after a tremendous individual effort to regain possession and get away from a defender. The Mexican international nearly fell after picking up lose ball, but regained his footing while working around a defender before sending a low show past Alberto from the top of the box.

Marcelo added a fourth goal for Los Blancos in the 75th minute to put the result beyond a doubt.
