Puma’s famed King boot goes modern with latest release

When you discuss soccer boots, there are three very famous classic retro silos that are still big staples of the conversation. Those boots, the adidas Copa Mundial, Nike Tiempo, and Puma King helped shape modern design and technology by pushing the boundaries in their respective times. With the way that the sport’s footwear has gone to bright colors, obvious patterns, and impossibly light weights, the classics have started to get a little lost in the grand scheme of things.

The Puma King had started to fall into that category with the likes of Thierry Henry and Yaya Toure, a pair of Puma's bigger names in the sport, moving away from the King and into the evoSpeed and evoPower boots, respectively. In a bid to return to relevancy, Puma have now officially unveiled the latest generation of the King boot, one that bears a number of technological improvements to bring the King into 2014/15.

The most noticeable thing about the new boot is its relatively bright colorway, which is a far cry from the King’s traditional black and/or white look. The boot comes in what Puma are calling a Majolica Blue / White / Lime Punch colorway and it certainly makes an impression. Like many other manufacturers, Puma have moved away from K-Leather for this boot but still promise a super-soft premium leather upper, which, in this case, is almost entirely the Majolica Blue color. The outsole and famous Formstrip on the instep out outside of the boot are both mostly white with Lime Punch accents both on those two elements and on the studs themselves.

Puma has introduced a new elastic band-based technology for lacing the boot that is reminiscent of Nike’s Flywire technology in that the laces are now directly connected to the outsole. When players tie their boots up, the bands pull the outsole in closer to the foot to provide a more complete fit from top to bottom. The boot’s weight comes in just north of the evoPower’s but is still relatively light for a leather boot and is basically weightless when compared to the older and much heavier PowerCat boot silo that the evoPower replaced.

The boot is slated for release early this month and players looking for the new and improved King will be able to get their hands on and feet in them soon.
