The La Liga tilt between Atlético Madrid and Valencia was advertised as the best of the weekend, and for good reason. These are very evenly matched teams playing great football at the moment. Atléti are the reigning champions, but Valencia are very hard to beat at the Mestalla. Should be close throughout, right?
Atlético Madrid are getting blasted to pieces by Valencia
YIKES.
Nope! Los Che are kicking the absolute piss out of Atléti! Miranda started the 13-minute beating with this really, really bad own goal.
Then, he completed one of the worst three-minute spells for any defender in the history of the sport by losing a 50-50 header, then getting turned, then getting shoved aside, then getting torched all in the matter of about five seconds, leading to Andre Gomes’ awesome second goal.
And somehow, it got worse. As bad as Atléti look, they should have still had an advantage on set pieces, where they are arguably the best side in the world on both sides of the ball. Instead, they conceded a headed goal on a corner to Nicolas Otamendi, who is about 5’10”.
So after 13 minutes, Atlético Madrid trailed Valencia 3-0. They’ve since pulled a goal back, but this was still a pretty astonishing spell.
